✏️Times Tables Challenge

Memorizing the tables is not drudgery — it is freeing up brain memory, and it is full of tricks and shortcuts.

What is 7×87 \times 8? If 56 pops out within half a second, you already know the payoff. People who know their tables race through fractions, prime checks and mental shopping math. The table is not a torture device — it is the toolbox of mathematics.

Why it pays off

Multiplication shows up everywhere. Once the tables are solid, division (which is multiplication backwards — 56÷7 really asks "7 times what makes 56?"), simplifying fractions, finding areas and later factoring all run smoothly. Without them, every 7×8 becomes a live calculation — like a phone low on memory, your brain stalls on small things and has nothing left for the big ones.

A free discount: commutativity

Multiplication comes with a free perk: the commutative law7×8=8×77 \times 8 = 8 \times 7. Order changes nothing.

A full grid holds one hundred little facts, and this one law makes half of them vanish: 8×7 and 7×8 are the same fact, so learning it once pays twice. Stuck on a fact? Turn it around: forgot 8×3? Think 3×8 instead and it comes back. That saves work, but it is also a real mathematical instinct — looking at a problem from the other direction is often the key to cracking it.

Every table has a trick

  • Twos: just doubling. 8×2? 8 plus 8, which is 16.
  • Fours: double twice. 7×4? 7 doubled is 14, and 14 doubled is 28 — multiplying by 2 twice.
  • Fives: the answer always ends in 0 or 5 — ends in 0 for even partners, in 5 for odd ones. Unsure of an answer? The last digit alone rules out half the options.
  • Nines: hold up all ten fingers. For 9×6, fold down finger number 6 — 5 fingers on the left give the tens digit, 4 on the right give the ones: 54. Bonus check: in any multiple of 9, the digits add up to 9 (54: 5+4=9).

Practice that sticks

Two hours of cramming once loses to five minutes a day for two weeks. Spaced practice — meeting today's missed facts again tomorrow — works far better than one long grind. Start each session by re-quizzing yesterday's facts, then learn new ones. And skip reciting in order (7, 14, 21…): quiz yourself out of order, because tests never ask in order.

Mistakes are treasure

Do not erase the ones you get wrong — star them. Your brain remembers facts it has stumbled on best of all. Start every session with those, and within two or three weeks the table is yours. To self-test, draw an empty 10×10 grid and fill it in: the cells you miss or hesitate over are your personal weak-spot list.

And when you get stuck, remember: it is not "I am bad at math", it is "I have not met these few facts enough times yet". A fact you got right today only sticks once it is still right three days later. Everyone can learn the tables — including you.
