🏠Math in Daily Life

Telling time, making change, comparing prices, estimating trips, scaling recipes — math is on duty all day long.

What time must you get up to avoid being late? How much is breakfast, and what change comes back from a 20 note? Which bus arrives first? Math is on duty from morning to night — it just never introduces itself. Today we read its duty roster out loud. Not convinced? Set off with three questions in your pocket: read the clock, count the change, compare the prices.

Math through one day

  • Morning: reading the hands you met in Telling Time — hour hand just past 8, minute hand on 6, it is 8:30;
  • Noon: lunch costs 12.5, you pay 20, and the change is 2012.5=7.520 - 12.5 = 7.5;
  • Afternoon: PE class is 3 laps of a 400 m track, 400×3=1200400 \times 3 = 1200 m in all;
  • Evening: the yogurt tub says "3 g of protein per 100 g". One 250 g tub delivers 3×2.5=7.53 \times 2.5 = 7.5 g of protein.

Subtraction, decimals and multiplication taking turns on shift — never a day off.

The unit-price duel in the supermarket

"Big bottle or small?" is a math question hiding in every shopping cart. A 2 L bottle costs 12, a 500 mL bottle costs 4 — comparing total prices means nothing. Compare unit prices:

  • Big bottle: 12÷2=612 \div 2 = 6 per litre;
  • Small bottle: 4÷0.5=84 \div 0.5 = 8 per litre.

The big bottle saves 2 per litre. The same move compares pack sizes: cereal at 25 for 500 g works out at 25÷500=0.0525 \div 500 = 0.05 per gram, while 45 for 1 kg is 45÷1000=0.04545 \div 1000 = 0.045 — the big pack wins per gram. Before leaving and at the stove

Estimate before you leave: a 90 km cycling trip averaging 30 km/h takes 90÷30=390 \div 30 = 3 hours; work backwards from the start time and you know when to set off. If the climb back slows your average to 20 km/h, the same 90 km takes 90÷20=4.590 \div 20 = 4.5 hours — leave extra time for the return. The finer points of travel are in Speed & Motion.

Cooking means scaling by proportion: a recipe for 2 uses 300 g of flour, but 5 guests are coming, so you need 300÷2×5=750300 \div 2 \times 5 = 750 g — and every oil, salt and spice times 2.5 as well. Kitchen measuring tricks are in Cooking Measurements.
