Say a rough number first, compute exactly second — estimation is a pocket-sized checker and a wallet guard.

At the checkout, your cart holds 6 items at roughly 20 each. Is 150 enough? You do not need the exact total — you need an estimate: a quick rough number, called out in your head, that answers "enough or not" first.

Estimating is not guessing. It has reliable methods.

Why estimate first

  • Catch errors: mistype one decimal on a calculator and the answer turns absurd — with a scale already in your head, you see it instantly;
  • Save effort: many questions never need an exact value, like "roughly how heavy is this box" or "about how many people will come";
  • Double-check: reviewing an exact answer against an estimate is much faster than computing everything again.

Estimate before computing and mistakes show up on the spot; estimate after computing and you get a free second check.

Rounding to estimate sums

Swap each number for the nearest tidy ten or hundred, then add:

198+211200+210=410198 + 211 \approx 200 + 210 = 410

The exact answer is 409 — off by just 1.

Notice the direction of the error: 396 rounds up to 400 (4 too many) while 505 rounds down to 500 (5 too few), so the errors nearly cancel — the estimate 400+500=900400 + 500 = 900 lands almost exactly on the true 901. Round everything up and the estimate runs high; round everything down and it runs low.

An even quicker trick is front-end estimation: keep only the leading digits. 5126+38925126 + 3892 is about 5000+3000=80005000 + 3000 = 8000. The true answer is 9018 — thousands still uncounted — so front-end estimates run low, but they fence in the answer fast.

Rounding to estimate products

Products work the same way: for 48×2148 \times 21, round 48 up to 50 and 21 down to 20:

48×2150×20=100048 \times 21 \approx 50 \times 20 = 1000

The exact answer is 1008 — a very respectable estimate. For shopping, party planning or buying materials, this precision is already enough.

Round to friendly numbers

Round to tidy tens and hundreds first: 48 to 50, 21 to 20, 512 to 500. Easy-to-compute beats exactly-close.

When exact answers matter

Estimates are useful, but in these places they do not get a vote:

  • Giving change: being off by 1 is still wrong;
  • Medicine doses: 5 milliliters means 5 milliliters;
  • Exam answers: when a question asks for the exact value, "about" earns no marks.

The best habit is two layers of insurance: estimate to fence in a range, then compute exactly and check that the answer lands inside. Anything outside the fence gets suspected and re-examined.
