🗿Roman Numerals

Seven letters that carried three thousand years — how to read and write Roman numerals, and why they finally lost to place value.

On clock faces, in book chapters, in the copyright line at the end of movies — Roman numerals never retired. This letter-as-number system served an empire for centuries, and reading it is not hard. It also quietly tells an important mathematical story: why place value was destined to win.

Seven letters do all the work

The complete toolkit of Roman numerals is seven letters:

A few memory hooks: I looks like one finger; V like an open hand; X is two V's stacked; C comes from the Latin centum (a hundred); M from mille (a thousand).

The basic rule is addition: larger values first, smaller ones after, all added up. VIII = 5 + 1 + 1 + 1 = 8; MMXXVI = 1000 + 1000 + 10 + 10 + 5 + 1 = 2026 — this very year.

The subtraction rule: small on the left

With addition alone, 4 would be IIII and 9 would be VIIII — far too wordy. The Roman improvement: a smaller digit before a larger one means subtraction.

  • IV = 5 − 1 = 4, IX = 10 − 1 = 9;
  • XL = 50 − 10 = 40, XC = 100 − 10 = 90;
  • CD = 500 − 100 = 400, CM = 1000 − 100 = 900.

There is one restriction: only I, X and C may act as the subtracting digit, one at a time. So 99 is XCIX, not IC.

One move reads them all

Scan left to right: while values stay flat or grow, keep adding; when a small digit sits before a big one, bind the pair, subtract, then carry on. MCMXCIV reads itself in one pass with this move.

Break it apart: M = 1000, CM = 900, XC = 90, IV = 4. The sum is 1000+900+90+4=19941000 + 900 + 90 + 4 = 1994. Plenty of 1990s movies close with exactly this — read the letters, get the year.

Two notations, side by side

The number 24, written both ways:

  • We write 24: two places, a tens place holding 2 and a ones place holding 4, every place worth 10 times the one to its right — see Place Value for that machinery;
  • The Romans wrote XXIV: X + X + IV, a running list of values with no notion of "place" at all.

Dial the expander and watch each digit multiply by 10, 100, 1000 as it slides left — precisely what Roman numerals cannot do. The costs come in three bills: no zero — "nothing" can only be left blank, and zero can never join a calculation; bigger numbers get longer — 3888 demands MMMDCCCLXXXVIII, fifteen letters, and standard notation stops at 3999 (MMMCMXCIX); column arithmetic is hopeless — carrying and borrowing have nowhere to live. So Roman numerals lost to place value — and the upgraded successor, which keeps huge numbers short and clean, is Scientific Notation.

Where you will still meet them

  • Clock faces: many clocks use Roman numerals, and they often carve 4 as IIII rather than IV — an old watchmaking tradition;
  • Chapters and ordinals: book chapters, numbered sequels, legal clauses and royal names (Louis XIV);
  • The Super Bowl: the annual American football final refuses Arabic digits — Super Bowl LVIII was number 58;
  • Copyright years: the line MMXXVI in a movie's credits means this year.
