Turn each category's count into a bar, and "who has more" becomes visible at a glance.
"Which pet does our class like best?" The raw answer is a list of numbers: dogs 8, cats 5, fish 3, hamsters 2. Reading the list is slow work; draw a few bars and the answer jumps out. That is the talent of a bar graph: it turns counting into comparing lengths.
What a bar graph draws
A bar graph answers one very common question: how much of each category is there?
- Each bar stands for one category: a pet, a month, a flavor;
- The taller (or longer) the bar, the bigger the count;
- Categories have no natural order, so rearranging the bars never changes what the graph means.
Three steps to read any bar graph
- Read the title and labels: what is being compared, and who is each bar?
- Check the scale: how much does one grid step on the vertical axis stand for — 1, 10, or 100? This is the easiest step to skip and the easiest one to get wrong.
- Compare and read: line each bar top up with the scale — estimate first, then check.
Switch to bar mode and play with the three datasets: guess which bar is tallest and who beats whom by how much, then check the value labels on top of the bars. A few rounds and your eye gets sharp.
Worked example: the class pet survey
Here is the survey from the opening, ready to graph:

Without reading a single number, one glance at the bars says a lot:
- Dogs are the favorite, 8 in all; hamsters are the rarest, just 2;
- Cats exactly tie with "fish plus hamsters": ;
- Dogs outnumber cats by — exactly the fish count;
- The top two add up to 13, the bottom two to only 5 — a huge gap.
When bars beat tables
Tables are good for looking up one exact value; bar graphs are good for comparing. To answer "which is biggest", "how many times bigger", or "how wide is the gap", bars of honest height beat a column of numbers every time. The smart habit: read the picture first for the pattern, then return to the table for exact figures.
Common trap
Check the scale before you read! The same bar is 5 on a graph where one step means 1, but 50 where one step means 10. Staring at bars while ignoring the axis is the biggest source of reading errors — and the favorite playground of the tricks in Misleading Graphs.
